Much to do today before we go help Bruce move home. I’ll post my weekend notes when we get back. The only entry I’ll make now is to publish a poem that cousin Dan sent to me this morning. It was written by his father—my Uncle Bob<\/a>.

Grandpa, teach us of truth.
\nI will help you study mathematics.
\nIs mathematics a language?
\nYes, but it never speaks of good or evil.
\nWhere shall we learn of good?
\nWe will read poetry.
\nBut must we not study God.
\nYes, yes, we will read from the Greeks.
\nIs that not history?
\nNo, I will teach you the history of your family.
\nBut Grandpa, that is not written?
\nWriting destroys the sense of time passing.
\nSo will we stop studying writing?
\nNo, write on paper that does not endure a century.
\nWhat about the Greeks?
\nTheir words were lost for a thousand years.
\nWas that bad?
\nProbably not, wisdom is better when it’s not seen as fact.
\nWhat about science?
\nCertainly you must study it, but it is always being revised.
\nYou mean it is just theories?
\nNo, science is about ways to make guesses about the future.
\nGrandpa, why do you always make us guess the answer to a problem?
\nWe have mental processes that can not be put in words.
\nIs that like when people talk about art?
\nExactly, or when athletes talk about playing ball.
\nGrandpa, have you learned much in your 70 years?
\nYes, but if I told you it would be like yesterday’s ball game.
\nIs it sad that when you die that will all be gone?
\nNo, you have a quarter of my genes.
\nBut must we discover again all that you already know?
\nIt seems that life requires refreshing everything but the bare essentials.
\nDoes that mean having children?
\nNo, it means having grandchildren.\n<\/p>\n
