{"id":2364,"date":"2011-06-03T16:31:48","date_gmt":"2011-06-04T00:31:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.xorph.com\/nfd\/?p=2364"},"modified":"2011-06-06T08:49:07","modified_gmt":"2011-06-06T16:49:07","slug":"been-meaning-to-write-this-for-three-months","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.xorph.com\/nfd\/2011\/06\/03\/been-meaning-to-write-this-for-three-months\/","title":{"rendered":"Been meaning to write this for three months"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A while back Stephen was telling me about those Patrick Rothfuss books for which all nerds have hard dicks. &#8220;What&#8217;s the best part?&#8221; I asked.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This guy Kvothe gets up on stage and plays his lute, and it&#8217;s really moving,&#8221; said Stephen.  &#8220;But not gay, because he has magic powers that make every woman want to bone him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Uh huh,&#8221; I said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fine,&#8221; he said, &#8220;what are YOU reading about?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.librarything.com\/work\/10813026\" title=\"'Tags: implacable assassins'\">Gun-toting bug-eating Muslim lesbians in space<\/a>,&#8221; I said.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, that isn&#8217;t strictly accurate.  The primary protagonist is agnostic and the secondary one is a dude.  But there are lots of guns, lots of bugs, lots of brutality (eg <a href=\"http:\/\/ommatidia.org\/category\/proserpina\/\">women throwing punches<\/a>), lots of Koran-analogs, and lots of great characters who aren&#8217;t white <a href=\"http:\/\/night-bazaar.com\/the-politics-of-cover-art-skinny-white-dead-chicks-selling-books.html\">even on the cover<\/a>. It is not gentle in introducing its weird setting, and is very mean to everyone you like, and there is torture in it! So avoid it if that&#8217;s going to bother you. But while everyone&#8217;s sputtering over how many darlings die in George R. R.
