If you are reading this, you are a person of discerning taste, and are almost certainly invited to my birthday party.  Michelle Kwan is, as previously mentioned, invited to my birthday party; so is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1411676\/\" title=\"Best known for her portrayal of Ben Affleck.\">Mindy Kaling, <i>ne&eacute;<\/i> Chokalingam<\/a>.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lumpley.com\/\" title=\"I imagine him as a kind of floating text box.\">Vincent Baker<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slaverats.com\/\" title=\"Not THAT Rob Thomas.\">televison&#8217;s Rob Thomas<\/a> are invited to my birthday party.  Maria and I watched <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0380609\/\" title=\"I'm not sure whether Topher Grace is invited.  Maybe if he was on Valium.\">P.S.<\/a> last night, which has restored Laura Linney&#8217;s invitation to my birthday party, after a brief revocation involving <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0265349\/\" title=\"It is not my fault I watched this.\">The Mothman Prophecies<\/a>.  Tom Peterson of LEO Weekly is invited to my birthday party.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcrw.net\/\" title=\"Somebody at her zine sent me four pounds of paperclips and I'm pretending it's her.\">Kelly Link<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0001833\/\" title=\"Also invited to my phone book-reading party.\">Emily Watson<\/a> are each invited <i>twice.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The obvious corollary is that mere joy or sexual allure are not enough to score an invitation&#8211;but being disinvited is not necessarily a slight.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xorph.com\/nb\/nb.cgi\/search\/nfd?q=hackers\" title=\"This should probably have its own category.\">Hackers<\/a> is not invited to my birthday party; it would spill soda on the ponies. M. Night Shyamalan has had his invitation taken away and put in my desk drawer until he makes a movie without a twist.  The casts of Arrested Development and Firefly are invited to my birthday party, but only one at a time.  We don&#8217;t want to lose focus.<\/p>\n<p>The metaphorical birthday party we&#8217;re discussing here is not to be confused with my actual birthday parties, which are pretty much just like Tuesday Night Basketball except I get to go &#8220;whoo!&#8221; and think about death.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To invite you to my birthday party is to hold you in high esteem.
