{"id":1823,"date":"2009-03-08T22:10:25","date_gmt":"2009-03-09T06:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.xorph.com\/nfd\/2009\/03\/08\/in-which-i-pick-on-a-universally-beloved-mute-cancer-survivor\/"},"modified":"2009-03-09T09:19:33","modified_gmt":"2009-03-09T17:19:33","slug":"in-which-i-pick-on-a-universally-beloved-mute-cancer-survivor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.xorph.com\/nfd\/2009\/03\/08\/in-which-i-pick-on-a-universally-beloved-mute-cancer-survivor\/","title":{"rendered":"In which I pick on a universally-beloved mute cancer survivor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.suntimes.com\/ebert\/2009\/02\/hunt_not_the_snark_but_the_sna.html\" title=\"Thanks to Bryant for the link.\">This essay presents me with problems<\/a>, because I agree with its hypothesis, but not its premises or its conclusion, so, er.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve said before that <a href=\"\/nfd\/2005\/07\/11\/columnist-taoism\/\" title=\"Said conversation is actually not lost to the winds of LJ because I have it in my email archives, but I still can't link it.\">snarky writing is weak writing<\/a>, after which a conversation with Holly led me to reduce my stance to &#8220;snarky writing is <i>comorbid with<\/i> weak writing.&#8221;  Ebert and I concur on this.  He goes on to state that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.televisionwithoutpity.com\/\" title=\"Motto: 'Proudest Tar Pit on the Internet'\">blogs devoted to pure snark are dumb<\/a>, and that gasping about the &#8220;gayest Oscars ever&#8221; because Hugh Jackman sat in Frank Langella&#8217;s lap is equally dumb; this is also true.<\/p>\n<p>Then he defends Joaquin Phoenix&#8217;s current performance art spectacle as an &#8220;accomplishment,&#8221; and as &#8220;committing himself as an actor.&#8221;  Sorry, Roger, but <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edward_Gordon_Craig\" title=\"Says the ex-actor.\">acting isn&#8217;t art<\/a> in and of itself, and acting like a bewildered person with nothing to say, without letting other people in on the joke, is no achievement at all.  (I have similar problems with Andy Kaufman, but at least he brought a Duchamp-like duplicity to the exercise.)<\/p>\n<p>More essential to his argument is his assertion that the snarkers should leave!  Oscar!  Alone!  Sorry again, but a critic of all people should understand that you don&#8217;t get to just declare that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.penny-arcade.com\/comic\/2004\/3\/24\/\" title=\"Twisp and Catsby would then go on to exemplify some of Gabe's most stylized and lovely art.\">it&#8217;s not <i>for<\/i> you<\/a>.  Joaquin Phoenix and the self-righteous pomp of the Oscars deserve no better than snark, because they&#8217;re functioning on the same level.  Scrape away the ornamentation, and there&#8217;s nothing worthwhile underneath.<\/p>\n<p>But that doesn&#8217;t mean that snarkery is a noble satirical endeavor.  Sumana (via John Hodgman) provides a better argument than Ebert:  snark is just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocf.berkeley.edu\/~sumanah\/cgi-bin\/nb\/nb.cgi\/view\/weblog\/2009\/03\/05\/\" title=\"I bet that is a pretty cool flask.\">&#8220;meh&#8221;<\/a> without the benefit of brevity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This essay presents me with problems, because I agree with its hypothesis, but not its premises or its conclusion, so, er.
