Only one of those isn't categorized under &quot;angst.&quot;\">&#8220;you gotta believe&#8221;<\/a> a lot, because&#8230;  well, I believe it, philosophically and biologically.  It&#8217;s a motto and a mantra.  I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ll ever know if I picked it up subconsciously somewhere, or whether it&#8217;s just one of those examples of convergent phrase evolution.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out there is a specific person to whom it&#8217;s ascribed, though, and his name was <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/classic\/obit\/s\/2004\/0105\/1701174.html?partnersite=espn\" title=\"&quot;Tug McGraw, the zany relief pitcher who coined the phrase 'You Gotta Believe' with the New York Mets and later closed out the Philadelphia Phillies' only World Series championship, died Monday. He was 59.&quot;\">Tug McGraw<\/a>, and he died yesterday.  His obituary is sad, but it&#8217;s also good reading.
