Barry Smith has proposed May Day as 24-Hour Webcomic Day, and I really want to participate. I have a physical need to draw comics again, and I can’t seem to make the opportunities happen, so maybe this will help. I could finally wrap up the neverending “Fire” arc in Xorph and maybe even start the next one. Also, it’s the weekend before my birthday, which means I get to punish myself for being old, and Maria’s going to be cramming for exams anyway–it’s nice to have company (Solitary Confinement notwithstanding).

What I’d really like is to do it with a couple of other comics people, but I don’t see that happening, since my comics people friends are scattered far and wee. I wonder if AIM supports multiple-voice chat. Or if you can do a comics jam on a train.

(For the record, no, I couldn’t do the real 24 Hour Comics Day even if there were a host store in Louisville; apparently all my finals are on April 26th.)

Finally, finally got the front page and chalkboard working again. The culprit was those sneaky scripts that say “Journal last updated (whenever),” which were looking for the old, nonfunctional NewsBruiser CGIs. That, and the fact that PHP functionality has changed since I wrote the scripts. Twice.

If you didn’t notice that those pages stopped working because there’s never any content, go away, kid, you bother me.

A Special Legacy of Violence and Pain

BRENDAN ADKINS OF THE CENTO has been awarded FIRST PLACE for COMIC STRIP OR PANEL

Yeah, remember Short Bus? The comic where I used to rip off Penny Arcade jokes and print them in the newspaper? Apparently it was the best comic strip for colleges with under 5000 students in Kentucky last year. Who knew?

It’s nice to have the validation, except that I know nothing about the competition or stakes in KIPA Division B. I may well have been the only entry. Also, this only drives back into my head the fact that I never draw comics anymore, dammit.

Whoa. Why just work at Google when you could work for Google on the moon?

Actually, they are hiring for real, which is intriguing. I hope they’ll still be doing it when I finally graduate. Seeing job opp pages at my dream companies always sets my heart a-thunderin’–until I remind myself that oh yeah, I’m still in school, and even if I were that good a programmer they’re not going to let me in the door without a couple years of pro experience first.

It’s nice to think about, though. I mean, the moon.

Hey, does anybody know how to center a DIV within another DIV in a cross-browser fashion? I’ve been using text-align, which is fine for IE, but doesn’t fly in Mozilla. Since I’m now kind of a Firebird (er, Firefox? Which makes no sense?) zealot, I really should get down to making NFD look right on my own screen.

Anyway, if you know, I’d just smother you in kisses for a note.

Oh, and Dreamhost sent out an announcement last night saying that the downtime / slowdown was caused by a DDOS attack. I guess I believe them, but I don’t understand why NFD shows up while the front page completely refuses to load. Did they somehow break PHP?

Grr. I like the fact that I have an insanely cheap deal with Dreamhost, but apparently the site’s been really slow lately, and until about ten minutes ago it was completely dead. If it doesn’t stay up, my apologies. If it looks like the downtime is enough for me to consider switching hosts, you can check my LJ for updates. Bleagh.

I should thank Aleeezon for very kindly putting me up this weekend, post-bacchanal. Will’s wedding was nice. Nobody fell down. And now back to the sweet, simple work that is failing my classes.

For some reason (most likely NewsBruiser’s ping of weblogs.com), NFD got listed at Blogweb.org. Sensing an opportunity for aggrandizement, I helpfully updated the listing, placing myself correctly in the elite category of XBOX/YANNI. Now I’ll just sit back and watch the hits pour in!

Hey, heads up. In case you syndicate NFD via its RSS feed, you should be aware that the feed address has changed (as linked right there). But then, of course, if you do read this thing only by syndication, you… won’t ever get this message. Um.

A lot of addresses have changed, actually, including the permalink format, but Leonard somehow managed not to break backward compatibility with old links. So they’ll still work, and the original NFD Lite permalinks (which redirect to the original NB permalinks) will still work, but the whole situation is just getting increasingly meta. One of these days the whole thing’s gonna go critical. Metacritical!
