Earlier this year, during my gallery talk for JUXTAPOSE<\/em><\/a>, a music educator made the observation: \u201cI didn\u2019t know that collage was so similar to jazz.\u201d Although I cannot recall making a reference to music, I was indeed talking about the nature of improvisation. For most of my life, I have held a certain envy for how musicians could spontaneously make music together in a way that eluded visual artists. The current explosion of collaboration in collage has changed that perception for me. Count me in for the occasional \u201cjam session\u201d with another collage practitioner, because there is nothing else like it. My thanks to Boston\u2019s Mary Madelyn Carney<\/a> for setting me up with a couple great \u201cstarts.\u201d I\u2019m looking forward to what she does with the ones I sent her. Stay tuned!
