I had some ruined wood frames, ornate in style, and started cutting them with a mitre saw to form a Swiss cross. To be honest, I didn\u2019t want to use that symbol, so it was easy to \u201ccancel\u201d the idea by rotating it 45 degrees, and now I had an X to \u201cmark the spot.\u201d Dead end? There had to be more to it than that. I shifted my attention to completing a collage, and I must have unwittingly assigned the problem to my subconscious, because I awoke after a night\u2019s sleep with the total solution in my head.
