{"id":15123,"date":"2021-05-03T11:10:29","date_gmt":"2021-05-03T15:10:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.xorph.com\/jadixon\/?p=15123"},"modified":"2025-12-21T14:44:04","modified_gmt":"2025-12-21T18:44:04","slug":"quarry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.xorph.com\/jadixon\/archives\/15123","title":{"rendered":"Quarry"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>\u201cPerpetual devotion to what a man calls his business is only to be sustained by perpetual neglect of many other things.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2014 Robert Louis Stevenson<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><strong>ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS<\/strong>,<\/em> the virtual exhibition organized by Kate Savage at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsconnectlex.org\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Arts Connect<\/a>, had its online event with artist commentary yesterday. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsconnectlex.org\/rock-paper-scissors---group-show.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.xorph.com\/jadixon\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/RockPaperScissors.jpg\" title=\"\u2018ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS\u2019 is online with Arts Connect\" width=\"231\" height=\"145\" \/ hspace=\"22\" vspace=\"25\" align=right \/><\/a>As I prepared some remarks about my included artwork, I looked back to see what I\u2019d written about it after its completion in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing \u2014 that\u2019s what I found.<\/p>\n<p>With an emphasis on documenting my journey into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xorph.com\/jadixon\/archives\/category\/movements\/en-plein-air\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">making collage <em>en plein air,<\/em><\/a> I\u2019ve apparently neglected to say as much about a corresponding investigation of studio-based landscape. Being a self-taught illustrator and fine artist, working from photographs has been a central part of the creative process \u2014 at least since my days as a \u201cgopher\u201d student in the 1970s, when I assisted veteran commercial artists compile reference scrap for tight-deadline assignments. In recent years, my work on location is informing how I do a collage painting indoors from a photo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.xorph.com\/jadixon\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Quarry_JADixon.jpg\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Quarry<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is a fitting example, created from a wonderful image by Jeff Hiles, an Ohio photographer who generously gave a green light to interpret his work in another medium. My piece also dovetails nicely with the theme of the show.
