Late November light penetrated the very top of a tall sycamore. It looked as if the tree was reaching up into the deep blue sky of autumn to capture the final rays.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The email notice stunned me for a moment. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xorph.com\/jadixon\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Dixon_SycamoreReach.jpg\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Sycamore Reach<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, my latest example of \u201cpainting nature with paper,\u201d had been chosen for a top local prize. I knew I\u2019d worked at the pinnacle of my abilities, and my fingers were crossed that it might be well received, but it was an unexpected thrill nonetheless. My surprise soon gave way to satisfaction, and I was left with the fullness of gratitude \u2014 a good place to be left.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.xorph.com\/jadixon\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/AmericanSycamore.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.xorph.com\/jadixon\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/AmericanSycamore.jpg\" title=\"a grand American Sycamore in Lexington, Kentucky\" height=\"300\" hspace=\"15\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"20\" width=\"200\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lexingtonky.gov\/pbn2020\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Paint by Nature: Trees<\/em><\/strong><\/a> was a stimulating opportunity to bring into the studio everything that I learned from another season of plein-air outings. Using photos I took with a smartphone, my subject would be <a href=\"https:\/\/lfucg.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/Shortlist\/index.html?appid=34d8d78ae42d4d14bb216b428f077cb3\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a grand American Sycamore<\/a> that inhabits the median of Lafayete Parkway in Lexington. I\u2019d looked at a few arboreal candidates during my research trip to the city, including a majestic Chinkapin Oak. There wasn\u2019t much direct illumination left when I got to the sycamore, my last destination. The lighting turned out to be ideal for a reference image.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a privilege to dedicate my creative effort to promoting the important role of trees and the priorities of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lexingtonky.gov\/browse\/utilities-and-streets\/live-green-lexington\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Live Green Lexington<\/a>.
