Behind the Muzak

Jon, Ken, Darren and Brendan all attend Centre College; Garrett is Badass in Residence at the University of Kentucky. All of us were down at GSP '98, whence our mutual acquaintance was born.

Jon began playing with his brother Chris as Grandma's Genius in March of '98, gathering buzz in Fulton, Kentucky. The band was geographically separated when Jon left for Centre, though they do still play frequently and plan to take the Jackson Purchase area by storm starting in June 2001.

Brendan and Ken started playing with co-GSPer and Centre student Will Johnston in the spring of 2000. They performed for the first (and only) time as The Bunches at Centre Carnival, opening for Kincaid Family Farm and Guster. After that project dissipated, Brendan and Jon (now rooming together) and Ken played together several times during the 2000-01 school year.

The grueling band name-selection process took several months, but the three finally settled on Buffalo Wang for their first gig. When Darren was persuaded (after weeks of pleading, cajoling and death threats) to join, the band re-christened themselves Short Story and set out to saturate the Danville musical market.

Since then, the guys have made progress away from covers toward original material; taken in a grand total of $105.37 in cash money; competed (and placed third) in what may be the world's least significant contest; gained and lost groupies; added the cuddly-but-dangerous Garrett to the mix; and defined their genre, unanimously, as bluesy softcore acoustic/electric deathpop trip-folk-rock. The stage is set for a success story of epic proportions...
