Slumber Parties, Operation Watershed and Long-Distance

Monday, March 6th, 2006

This weekend was a good weekend. Friday my mom and I went down to my grandma’s farm and we celebrated her 81st birthday with all the other women of the family with a slumber party. We played this game called “Imaginiff” where you try to guess what other people will guess. It’s confusing unless you play it, but it sort of tries to show how well you know each other. My cousin Nic’s girlfriend, the one girl there who hasn’t been in the family since she was born, won. Pretty funny.

The next day the whole family worked on getting the spring hooked up so my grandma would have fresh water all the time. I was on transportation duty so I drove the truck back and forth between places. I got to do this because I could drive a stick shift in a truck that had 4-wheel drive. Pretty fun driving through creeks and on sideways hills, but sort of scary too. We called it Operation Watershed and got T-shirts for it. Have I mentioned my family is the most organized extended family in the world?

Sunday, I took Brendan back to Louisville and stopped by to see Kyle. We went to his church, and it was a good experience. Definitely different for me, but we had some good conversation about it I think. Then we went to Kyle’s roommate’s girlfriend’s birthday party at Lazer Blaze. The first game was a team game and I got 24th out of 25. The second was solo and I got 16th out of 26, so I improved. Kyle got 6th both times, but he wasn’t happy about it the second time. Then we went back to his apartment and I made myself leave at 10. I didn’t want to and I was tired the whole drive home, but I made it. At first, it seemed like it was almost worse to go see Kyle for only a few hours and maybe I shouldn’t have gone, but now I’m glad I did. Long-distance can suck, but it’s worth it when you have the right person.

Ash Wednesday

So today I went to Mass at St. John, though I was late because I had to work until 12 and the only Mass they had on the website was at 12, but that’s okay. I got there as the Gospel was being read. Last time I went to Mass there, there were three G-town football players sitting behind me, and I know I shouldn’t stereotype but it surprised me that they were there. Today, they were sitting in the same row as me, or at least I thought it was them again. But as I was leaving, I was walking behind them to walk back to campus. The church is like 1 block away, if that. Anyway, I saw them get into a car, so I thought they must be from the high school or something. But no, I saw them drive into a G-town parking lot, and the 2nd closest one to the church at that. I drive a lot of places, but that was ridiculous.

Speaking of driving and walking, because it was so pretty out today, Melissa and I walked to this bank on Main St. where you can get G-town checks cashed. Her bank is in Lexington, and I found out where this bank was when one of my profs was explaining where something else was, so we decided to go cuz she’s had the check for almost 60 days and it is not valid after 60 days we found out today. Then we got smoothies and sat outside and drank them. It was fun and I wish every day was like that. Amzingly, I haven’t had much homework this week. Which means I should be doing other stuff, but I haven’t. I worked on my thesis quite a bit, but none of the hard stuff, just the fun stuff.

And now I’m writing this. I was planning on writing about some drama going on with our little group, but now I don’t feel like it, and probably nobody wants to hear about it. However, I did tell my mom about it and she said it was like when her and her friends used to steal each other’s bras, get them wet, and put them in the freezer. Which brought up a funny memory about how my cousins and I are terrible at pranks. One night we were all staying over at my cousin Rachel’s house, and we took Holly’s bra and put it the freezer. Only problem was, we didn’t get it wet, so it didn’t do much, just got it really cold for a while. Fun times.

By the way, I think for my promise for Lent, I’m going to try to start exercising and praying every night, like I used to. Hopefully it will work.
